After the resounding success of Fallen Voices, Evil Diva Productions is tackling its biggest challenge yet: bringing H.P. Lovecraft’s most famous story to the operatic stage.
With a libretto by Kristin Mueller-Heaslip and Suzanne Kilgore and music by Benjamin Mueller-Heaslip, Call of Cthulhu: The Opera will feature an all-girl cast of Toronto’s best up-and-coming opera singers, a chorus of pirates, inmates, and cannibals, and a two-story Cthulhuphone – part monster, part musical instrument – designed and created by resident saxophonist and visual designer Jen Wardle.
For we men are but maggots squirming about the earth,
blind to a larger and darker cosmos – we are nothing.
When the stars are right man’s rule will end -
that is not dead that can eternal lie,
and with strange aeons even death may die.
– Castro’s aria, Act II
